I’m an organic food fanatic. I buy organic, locally grown produce whenever possible, because it tastes better and is more nutritious than conventional fruits and vegetables. But my love of organic food hasn’t always been mutual: When I first started shopping for organics back in the 1980s, they were incredibly expensive and hard to find. Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to buy organic produce at supermarkets across America—in fact, you can even find them at discount stores like Walmart! And as anyone who has shopped for produce knows all too well, there are often twice as many options for conventional fruits than there are for “natural” ones (which usually means they’ve been waxed or sprayed with chemicals). So why do people choose conventional over organic? Is there really such a big difference between these two types of fruits? And if so…why?
