Makhana is a term for several different types of nuts and seeds. These include black sesame seeds, black walnuts, makhana (or fenugreek), water chestnuts/taro root, and lotus seeds. All of these are considered to be “brain tonics,” which means they help improve memory and cognitive function. They’re also used in Ayurvedic medicine as a way to help reduce anxiety and improve sleep patterns.
Black sesame seeds
You may be familiar with sesame seeds, but black sesame seeds are not the same thing. They’re actually a completely different kind of seed that comes from the same plant as regular sesame seeds.
Black sesame seeds are rich in protein, iron and calcium–and they also contain zinc and selenium. These minerals make them an important part of your diet if you’re looking to improve your health or treat certain conditions like anemia (iron deficiency).
In Ayurveda medicine, black sesame seeds are used as a treatment for anemia due to their high mineral content; however there aren’t any scientific studies that have proven this yet so we can’t say for sure how effective it would be!
Black walnuts
Black walnuts are the nut of the black walnut tree. They’re a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants. The nuts also contain protein and fiber–both important nutrients for overall health.
Black walnuts have been shown to have high concentrations of antioxidants which may help protect against cancer cells growing in the body by slowing down the process in which they multiply
Makhana
Makhana is a type of nut that grows in water. It has been used in Indian cuisine for centuries and is known by many names, including water chestnuts and lotus seeds. Makhana is also popular as a snack food in India where it can be found in grocery stores or street vendors selling it as candy or savory snacks like chaat (Indian street food).
Water chestnuts/taro root
Water chestnuts are a root vegetable and they are closely related to several aquatic plants. They have been cultivated in China for over 2,000 years and were introduced to Japan in the 7th century. Water chestnuts have a crunchy texture and are used in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cuisine.
The water chestnut is also known as “taro root”. Taro is an edible tropical plant with starchy tubers that grow underground on various subtropical islands around the world.
Lotus seeds
Lotus seeds, also known as saffron in Ayurveda, are a great source of protein and fiber. They can be used as a coffee substitute or to make tea. The best thing about lotus seeds is that they can be eaten raw or cooked–try them out!
